MWF Seeking BFF

I recently read a book that hit really close to home, called “MWF Seeking BFF.” The 28 y/o author, Rachel, moves to Chicago from NYC with her boyfriend and gets married shortly after. But, she realizes her life is missing one thing: good girlfriends. Her BFFs live all across the country: SF, NYC, Boston, DC, etc. but she is craving quality girl time in her new hometown.

In the memoir, Rachel develops a plan to go on 52 friend-dates for a year, in hopes of meeting potential new BFFs. While I feel blessed to live in a city with one of my dearest BFFs now (and some really great gal pals!), I definitely was in the same boat as Rachel when I first moved to SF and am continually looking to expand my friend circle. (The more the merrier, no?!)

I found the book engaging, funny and inspiring! I could totally relate to her lifestyle and have had a number of similar experiences. (When I first moved to SF I was determined to meet a friend on the train and low-and-behold, I randomly did! She’s now in one of my book clubs.)

I’d totally recommend it! Love, Nik

I just requested this book from the library and am so excited to read it! What’s on your nightstands ladies? Lupe, when does your KILLER new cookbook come? -AI

I just stumbled across this vintage Peanuts book, “Love Is Walking Hand in Hand” by Charles Schultz and it got me feeling sentimental. The book follows the Peanuts gang as they “define love through the simple acts and moments of everyday life.” Who knew cartoons could be so profound and spot-on? Love, Nik

Small Demons

I know there are a number of voracious readers on LWS, so I’m thinking that this new site called Small Demons may come in handy.

The site allows you to search the “Storyverse” for the people, places and things mentioned in the books you read. For example, every pop culture reference, song mentioned, character, etc. whether real or fictional are all listed here.

So, you can learn more about that song that was mentioned in your favorite book, see what other books referenced it and even purchase the album. Search works in reverse so you can see what books have referenced your favorite cities, actors, musicians, etc, too. Interesting! Love, Nik

The Prince's Speech: On the Future of Food

Have you foodies heard of the book “On the Future Of Food” by Prince Charles? I just read this article from the Huff Post about it (which also reminded me that I need to put “Omnivore’s Dilemma” back on the top of my to-read list when I have a chance) and I am intrigued!

I’ve recently concluded that my life seems to be lacking passion (or at least things I feel really strongly about), so I’m going to start to fix that by being passionate about my health. I’ve been dramatically increasing my trips to the gym and tackling food intake is right up there, too.

In fact, I was inspired by a good girlfriend of mine to keep a daily food journal, so I’ve been documenting what I consume for the past 3 weeks in this cute little notebook I found on a shopping trip. (Of course it says “Life is short, eat dessert first.” Hey! It’s all in moderation, eh?) I’m not being so strict as to track calories, but it definitely makes me think twice about eating something if I know I have to write it down later.

I’m thinking I may want to grab a couple of these books listed above for further inspiration/motivation, too. What are some of your favorite books and/or tricks to eat healthy, ladies? Love, Nik

Dr. Seuss probably wouldn’t have sold as many books with titles like these, but check out these alternate covers that reveal what the classic books are really about. Love, Nik
